Live Art: dialogues 2

I have recently taken part in a second ‘Dialogues’ workshop, from the series Live Art. Dialogues 2 was a continuation and a development of themes discovered in the initial workshop, responding to several visual and aural observations.

The sound produced  by the friction of a pencil across a support is an overlooked (underheard) bi-product of the act of drawing, a sonic trace that is ephemeral and undetermined. An aim of the second workshop was to concentrate on, and bring focus to the sound of drawing, and drawing with sound, and to give it permanence through audio recording and documentation.

The sound of drawings made by one practitioner was captured using microphone pencils (‘pencrophones’) and by drawing upon an ‘electro-acoustic drawing board’ which passed through a number of digital and analogue sound filters, manipulated by an other practitioner, who could mutate, loop and sustain the source, therefore to make audio drawings. Another observation of the workshop was to examine the sound of drawing as possessing a pitch melody that can be mapped onto a musical scale.

Live Art - dialogues

As part of my research into the creative processes behind my work, I undertook the first of a number of collaborative projects, On this occasion exploring 'dialogues' between the audible and visual arts. 'Live Art - dialogues' existed through the discourse of Improvisation where the participants could draw on their instincts and intuitions to respond to the others activities. Using the determinations of action, and consideration to govern the collaboration, both participants were able to invent and test concepts, methods and devices and trial different modes of practice through improvisation.

Live Art - dialogues was the first of a number of collaborative experimental platforms investigating Improvisation and other creative processes, many of which will be open to the public to view and participate. Future projects will be updated to the blog with times and dates when applicable.

I am exhibiting in the Aberystwyth School of Art Masters Exhibition commencing the 21st May 2011 lasting for a few weeks. I will be exhibiting alongside other masters students in the downstairs galleries of the School of Art. I will be displaying a number of pieces in a range of scales and medium from my latest project. The following sentences are an extract from the catalogue statement;
My work uses abstraction as an expression of subjective experience offering responses to the world around us and reflections of life and of existing. The pieces share a close relationship with the ‘landscape’, something I hold great empathy with acting as a footing for experience and feeling. Through the language of paint and the physical act of painting my work acts as an excavation into my subconscious retrieving experiences and memories often vague and hazy. Through the process of painting, responsive and often improvised, the pieces result in meaning and feeling that exist far outside the painting themselves, appealing directly to a viewers emotions, leaving them free to interpret and to imagine.

The Opening for the exhibition is on the 21st May 2011 running from 2pm - 9pm.

Latest Work! (may 2010)

My latest area of study is taking the theme of painting and its properties, important to my earlier work, but exploring it as the main subject anf focus of my work. Through this I am looking at deliberate and accidental paint marks and the process of painting, incorporating experiments and explorations into the notions of space, time, movement and concept within the realm of painting.

Below are some photographs of my studio and the development of some themes in my work.
